The Los Angeles based ensemble is based in deep funk, soul, jazz fever and musical friendships. A Breakestra show is about dancing and swinging — eight men on stage getting loose, playing serious grooves. Think James Brown. Watching the Breakestra live is a tour de force. As Miles says, “What are the first three letters of FUNK?”

Two classic Technics 1200 turntables spin in unison, an outstretched arm reaches for the fader. Behind the large shadowy silhouette of a tightly braided afro, looms the twisted irony of the colorful, enigmatic, and now iconic “sun” from sublime’s 40 oz To Freedom encapsulated within the frame of an RIAA certified multi-platinum record award. The strategic touch of a colossal hand scratches the grooves of vintage 180 gram vinyl over a jazzy rendition Gershwin’s standard “Summertime”, carefully selected from the classic LP- Herbie Mann’s 1961 -Live at the Village Vanguard.

The name might not strike an immediate chord but Willie Waldman is one you’ll find in the liner notes of great artists and groups such as Banyan, Rob Wasserman, Perry Farrell and the late Tupac Shakur. While the list goes on, there’s much more to this trumpet players credit than simply recording as a sideman on many of today’s contemporary artists albums. Listen –

powered by Silent Frisco

Silent Disco” was developed at Glastonbury Festival in the UK and pushed in Germany, Australia and Holland. Silent Disco made its first US appearance in 2005, where Silent Frisco founder Robbie “Motion Potion” Kowal was the resident DJ and was the first American DJ to perform on Silent Disco. Since then, Kowal, and Silent Frisco have been pushing this unique concept throughout the US where up to 1,000 attendees listen via headphones to each DJ set. It’s a unique environment where it’s “silent” except the laughter and shouting over the music in the headphones. Motion Potion (aka MoPo – San Francisco)

(aka Robbie Kowal) is one of America’s most versatile, experienced and flat-out joyous party rockers. HIs decade long mission is to ‘put the party back in the party’, and to connect the casual music fan wit hte hard core dance music mavens; proving that music is more than just beats. These abilities have seen him preceding, following or tagging with a who’s who of breakbeat heros like Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Icey, Cut Chemist, Grandmaster Flash, James Lavelle, Bassnectar, DJ Vadim, Tipper, Z-Trip and more…He brings his skills and party style to Utah’s 1st ever Silent Disco. Scott Llewellyn on drums and Nathaniel Haas on percussion and vocals keep the band driving while adding a touch of poly-rhythmic flare to their unique brand of music. The quintet’s sound is rooted in rock and roll with elements of funk, bluegrass, metal and electronica. Smooth Money Gesture’s music has taken these influences and twisted them around with the individual band member’s influences and musical presences, and evolved their own sound into a high energy psychedelic creation of their own which grabs the crowd and won’t let go!

Longtime friends hailing from Heber City, Utah, Thomas Brunson, Jeff Vanderlinden, Zaz McDonald and Steven Siggard formed Holy Water Buffalo in early 2009. With a combination of jangly guitar, vocal harmony, deep bass, melodic organ and palpitating drums they create a late sixties sound with a contemporary Rock & Roll style. Holy Water Buffalo has infiltrated the music scene in Utah, getting regular radio play and countless show offers. The band has played Powellapalooza Music Festival, Uncle Uncanny’s Music Festival, Sundance Film Festival House of Blues and many main stages of Salt Lake City, Park City, Provo, Ogden and St. George. In December, Holy Water Buffalo was crowned the winner of Velour’s Battle of the Bands. Recently Tamara Conniff, founder of and former billboard editor wrote in an article featured on The Huffington Post that “they sound like the Kings of Leon should sound.”

Hollowing out of the depths of the Ogden music scene, Fox Van Cleef took the art of the quintet rock group, long trendy and dead since the 1980’s, and brought it back with a unique sound and live presentation that set them apart from many of the rockers making their way around the Utah music scene.

Pulling their vocal style out of the classic blues and soul music, the group mixed it up with a 70’s psychedelic rock and hip-hop influenced beats to create their unique sound. Mixing in old-school ways with modern structuring, every song brings about a totally different experience while incorporating every member as an essential part. Whether it be a trippy riff, a pulse pounding beat, a spine-tingling bass line or even just a melodic tune off the keys, the members act as a well trained team with one simple goal in mind; to seduce the ears and minds of all around and leave them wanting more.

In 2007 the group released a four-song self-titled EP and quickly found a following, in 2009 the group released their first album – Cigarettes, Terrorisim, Etc. In the fall of 2010 their third recording; an EP entitled Pleasure Junkies will be released FUNJULUM

“Distinctive lead vocals, toe-tapping rhythm and solid songwriting on this acoustic Americana flavored material.” “Gigi Love’s hook is her voice, an impossibly mellifluous warble that fairly melts one’s insides. It sets us up so the songs-can knock us down. How she does it? By singing of simple things and concepts like “Kisses” and “Destiny” and putting them in no unique or innovative context-she just captures their essences and conveys the emotion. It’s no big trick, but then it is-it’s easy to sing a song, but much more difficult to connect with a listener. This, Love does with magical aplomb.” - Randy Harward-Harp Mag/SL Weekly for calendar and pictures
