Wasatch Mountain Head Rowing Regatta8:00 AM
S.R. 319 Bldg 515 Box 4, Heber City Utah3:00 PM

The event will start at the Personal Watercraft Ramp at Hailstone at Jordanelle State Park.

The Wasatch Mountain Head, a rowing race of five kilometers, will be held at Jordanelle Reservoir, October 13th. Competitors will include the locals Utah Crew, Waterford High School, Great Salt Lake Rowing, Park City Rowing Academy, and the Huntsman Cancer Institute Rowing Program. The race is expanding this year to include out of state guests, including visitors from Colorado and Oregon. All boat categories will be represented here, from one-person singles to eights with a coxswain (the person responsible for steering and strategic calls). The “Wendy Whitney Cup” will be awarded to the team that amasses the greatest number of points for the day.

In “Head” style racing, boats start in sequence and race against the clock.  Head racing has its roots in the rowing events among the colleges of Oxford University and Cambridge University, where rowing takes place on narrow, winding bodies of water.  The fastest boat in the race is traditionally given the title of “Head of the River”. The Head of the Charles is the largest and most famous North American example of this style of racing, attracting 8,500 rowers from all over the world, and 300,000 spectators in attendance. Watching Head Races is a leisurely activity best enjoyed with a picnic, and walking, running or biking along trails beside the course. At Jordanelle Reservoir, a beautiful mountain bike trail on the North side of the reservoir starting at the Rock Cliff site provides great views of the course.

Rowing promotes fitness, health, teamwork and mental toughness. The rowing and racing lifestyle can be pursued at any age, as evidenced by observing youngsters running along the river shouting “Go Grandma!” to encourage that dear person in her efforts to win the race, stay healthy, and perform well for her full lifetime.  Great Salt Lake Rowing is a local rowing organization that provides rowing lessons to beginning adult rowers and memberships with equipment access ( Utah Crew offers “Learn to Row” programs for students 13 and older from any school. Students who have completed the “Learn to Row” programs can develop their competitive edge in the Utah Crew Junior Varsity and Varsity Competitive programs.
